Letter to My Younger Brother

Hey bro,

Living away on my own has given me a lot of time to reflect on what actually makes someone a mature, self-reliant man. I wanted to share a few straight thoughts with you for the future.

Be Fully Self-Reliant

Start learning how to run your own life now — cooking, cleaning, laundry, and grocery shopping aren’t “women’s jobs,” they are basic adult survival skills. Take care of your basic health and hygiene, including skincare.

Break Household Double Standards

Don’t just sit in the living room having tea with the men while mom, aunts, or sisters are stuck doing all the work in the kitchen. Step up, clear plates, help cook, and share the load. Kill the idea that domestic work belongs to women.

Drop the Taboos

Don’t treat natural things like periods or meantal health as shameful secrets or punchlines. Being mature and educated about basic biology is part of growing up.

Real Strength Includes Emotional Honesty

Normalize talking about mental health. Seeking help or counseling isn’t weak, and opening up or showing vulnerability to people who care about you takes more courage than bottling everything up.

Respecting Women Isn’t Optional

Drop the casual maa-behen gaalis and sexist jokes, even if your friends do it. Women in our society already deal with enough nonsense. Stand with them and never laugh off someone else’s pain.

See Through the Hate

In India, you’ll constantly hear casual bias against different religions, castes, or people from other states. Don’t buy into it. Treat every single human as an individual with basic dignity, not a label.

Handle Toxic Friends Smartly

If a friend makes ugly comments about someone’s identity or gender, call it out calmly: “That’s not cool, bro.” If they want to learn, support them. If they double down on being hateful, quietly distance yourself. You become who you surround yourself with.

Pick Your Battles and Protect Your Peace

Violence and endless arguments with unreasonable people solve nothing. Walk away from brain-rot arguments, but hold strong boundaries if someone targets you say: “We aren’t close enough for you to make that joke on me.”

I’m telling you all this because I want you to be a grounded, independent guy who commands genuine respect anywhere in the world.

Always got your back, man.
